Interview with Kirsty Moseley

About this author

Kirsty Moseley has always been a passionate reader since she was a little girl, devouring books overnight, barely sleeping and paying for it at school the next day. Writing has come similarly to her and once she discovered Wattpad, she finally plucked up the courage to post one of her stories. Seven million reads later, she self-published her debut novel THE BOY WHO SNEAKS IN MY BEDROOM WINDOW, which later became one of 10 Finalists for the 2012 Goodreads' Choice Awards, Best YA Fiction. Shocked and overwhelmed by the response, she published her second novel ALWAYS YOU a few months later.

If she had to sum herself up in one word, it would probably be 'daydreamer' - but unlike most of her school teachers, she doesn't necessarily view that as a bad thing. After all, she read somewhere once that books are like waking dreams....

She lives in Norfolk, England with her husband and son.

I am a massive fan of Kirsty Moseley, and I was so ecstatic when she agreed to do this interview with me.

Lisa ~ The boy who sneaks into my bedroom window is my all time favorite book. It deals with some serious deep issues. Is there a story behind the novel or was it a story that just came to you? What inspired you to write it?

Kirsty ~ I've always loved the idea of boy next door romance. Plus, I like sweet romances where the girl is treated like a princess and makes her feel safe. It was playing around with that idea that the sleeping in the bed together came to me - after that Liam's character kind of invented himself and I knew I had to write the story.

Lisa ~ Most of your novels are written about young adults. Is there a reason you do this? Do you relate more to a young adult then an older adult?

Kirsty ~ The new genre kind of fits it now, but before New Adult genre was "created" then I guess my books would have been aimed more at Young Adult, but older teens, not younger ones. I've always liked the coming of age type stories, the ones where you just learn about love or get your first job, first house, first become independent, that sort of story line really draws me in and is things that I like to read about. I guess maybe I'm just a big kid at heart maybe!

Lisa ~ Back to The boy who sneaks into my bedroom window. Have you ever considered doing a prequel novel for Jake?

Kirsty ~ For a little while I considered it, but the story line I had in my head I didn;t feel was strong enough for a whole book. I don't like to drag out my characters too much, and although I love Jake dearly, I feel that he would get his happy ending without me having to write it - as hinted at the end of The Boy Who Sneaks. Never say never, but at the moment I have nothing planned for him.

Lisa ~ You've just released Reasons not to fall in love. What project are you starting next?

Kirsty ~ I have a couple of things on the go at the moment - again, New Adult romance as that's my thing! I can't say too much at the moment though, sorry!!!

Lisa ~ All your books are different from one another, but they are all young adult, contemporary, have you thought about branching out? Doing another genre? Or do you have a specific writing style?

Kirsty ~ Actually, yes! Once I get a bit of free time I'd love to write Young Adult (aimed at 14-17 year olds) fantasy fiction. I have a long list of books and ideas for this genre, and I'm very excited to write them!

Lisa ~ What has been the best thing about being an author?

Kirsty ~ Apart from working in my pyjamas?? It has to be doing something that I love passionately and being able to support my family while doing it. Not many people get paid to do something that they love doing! I'm very lucky.

Lisa ~ Are any of the characters in any of your books based on anyone in your life?

Kirsty ~ Some, yes. Some of the more... harsh ones, are based on a couple of people I know. Also, the male leads in my books all tend to have elements of my husband in them. I actually do get treated like a princess, a spoiled one at that!!

Lisa ~ How do you feel about the reviews on your last novel?

Kirsty ~ Reviews are fine, everyone is entitled to their opinions all be it good or bad. As an author you realise very quickly that you can't please everyone, there will ALWAYS be people who don't like your book, but that's part of it. Life would be pretty boring if everyone liked the same thing!

Lisa ~  What inspires you to keep writing?

Kirsty ~ It's not really inspiration, its a burning desire to get the characters/story out of my head. Once I get an idea for a story or a character that I already know I'd fall in love with while writing it, then usually it niggles and niggles until I get it down on paper!

Lisa~ I ask all author mummys this question, How do you manage to keep a balance between your every day life  to your writing life?

Kirsty ~ Great difficulty. I don't sleep well, so that helps with timing! My little boy is at school now so usually when he's at school that's my "working hours" and when he's at home I very very rarely get the laptop out. Family time is important so I tend not to work when he's around, I don't want to miss him growing up or look back and think that I was too busy working that I missed everything. You don't get that time back! Working all day when he's at school and then spending time with him generally means my house is a tip! Housework is not for me, at all; in fact, they should outlaw housework all together!

Lisa ~  If you could choose an author to be your mentor who would you pick and why?

Kirsty ~ After meeting her in Edinburgh this weekend, I would choose Jay Crownover. She was the coolest woman, so confident and just so adorable and down to earth. I loved meeting her and she was truly inspiring.

Lisa ~ Describe yourself in five words ....

Kirsty ~ Wife. Mummy. Romanticist, Chocoholic, Daydreamer

Lisa ~  What do you like to do in your spare time?

Kirsty ~ What is this spare time you speak of???? If I'm not writing or playing with my little boy or hanging with my hubbie, usually I'll read, watch re-runs of 24, go to the movies or hang out with my family. I'm a bit of a "home bird" so I don't go out partying like I used to!

Lisa ~  As an author as huge as yourself, you must get stopped a lot in the street. Can you tell us about the first time it happened and how you felt?

Kirsty ~ I've never been stopped in the street, ever! I try to keep everything separate to my life, so don't post many photos of myself really or announce that I'm a writer. I got away with being anonymous for a year and a half but recently the other mums up the school have found out that I'm an author. It's weird, to me I'm just Kirsty so if anyone else ever thought that I was something special then I'd probably not cope well with that! It was hard enough at the Edinburgh signing when people were all excited to meet me and a few fangirl moments happened - it confuses me still as I'm just me!

Lisa ~  Okay, last question .... If you could say something to your readers what would it be?

Kirsty ~ Thank you SO much for supporting me and reading my books. I wouldn't be where I am today without people buying my books, I'd still be working part time to help pay the bills and my stories would be sitting on a USB card gathering dust at the back of my drawer! So thank you all for changing my life x

I have to add in this last part regards to the fan girl comment. I don't know about anyone else, but when I read the boy who sneaks in my bedroom window changed my aspect on certain things in life. It's no secret to some people that I have gone through the ringer, and instead of coming out stronger it made me weaker. When I read that novel, the emotion of everything and the strength of the characters really made me feel like another person. Yes, I'm not stronger than I hoped to be, but for me that book was really inspirational. I have read it so many times, I think I know it off by heart. It was the same when I read Nothing left to lose. Its how I felt so many times during my life, reading that also changed my views on things. I know the story's are fictional, but we read to escape reality of life. When I read your novels, I felt like I was right there along side them, healing, moving on etc. You really should be proud of your work, and the accomplishment you've achieved. To you, you maybe just Kirsty, but to us readers you are so much more.
